Most people say that touring Machu Picchu is the highlight of their trip to Peru. The rainforests in Peru and the stunning mountain ranges are popular for numerous reasons, but the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu that sits high in the Andes Mountains is a world wonder. Built in the 15th century, Machu Picchu is known for its stone walls that fuse huge blocks without the use of mortar. Machu Picchu overlooks several large valleys and its tremendous ruins, stunning masonry, and interesting architecture are visited by millions of tourists every year. Some of the main highlights you will enjoy on your Machu Picchu travel experience include the following:
The Sun Gate
There are stairs leading up to the Sun Gate, which are believed to have been used as a way to control people who were entering and leaving the city. Sunrise from the Sun Gate is a must-see spectacle.
The Inca Bridge
Used in secret by the Incan army, the bridge is carved into a cliff on the west route out of Machu Picchu. Instead of an actual bridge there is a stone path carved out of the cliff rock. The path is actually a 20-foot drop that was meant to deter unwanted guests.
The Watchman’s Hut
The Watchman’s Hut is a perfect place to get a phenomenal view of the whole city.
The Funerary Stone
Outside of the Watchman’s Hut is a peculiarly carved rock known as the Funerary Stone.
